IOWA EQUINE PROGRAMS
Iowa State University
is a land-grant university located in Ames, Iowa. and offers a B.S. in Animal Science with an Equine Management Option.
The course work includes Equine Science, Fundamentals of Equine Behavior and Training, Nutrition, Reproduction, and Marketing and Management of Livestock Events. Iowa State also has a
Horse Farm
with Stables and a herd of approximately 40 Thoroughbreds, paints, and Quarter Horses. The Horse Farm is used in interactive student teaching and practicuums.
Iowa State is also base home for the USDA Extension 4-H Program in Iowa. The Extension Programs
are thorough and well organized with ongoing short courses in equine education. Of particular note is the Master Equine Manager Program.
This Program is a series of online courses delivering a broad range of equine education. Two Levels of Certification are available and each Certificate must be maintained through continuing education (3 hours per year) and six hours of volunteer work (4-H) per year.
Iowa State also has a
College of Veterinary Medicine
providing a professional DVM Degree. The College of Veterinary Medicine also offers complete equine clinical health care including equine surgery.
Iowa State offers both a
Hunt and Stock Teams
competining on an intercollegiate level in several shows per year. The
Rodeo Club
competes intercollegiately and operates the sanctioned Cyclone Stampede annually.
Ellsworth Community College
is located in Iowa Falls, Iowa, and offers an A.A.S. in
Equine Science
and an A.A.S. in
Equine Management.
The course work includes Riding, Training, Stable Operations, Equine Health and Anatomy, Farrier Science, and Computer Applications.
The Ellsworth College
Equestrian Team
operates from the Equestrian Center which houses 155 stalls and is complete with outdoor arena and an indoor arena with seating for 500.
Kirkwood Community College
is located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and offers an A.A.S. in Horse Science Technology. Course work includes Equine Anatomy, Equine Breeding and Management, Nutrition, Business Management, Groundwork, and Training.
The
Iowa Equestrian Center
is located at Kirkwood College and provides 210 stalls, a Show Arena, and is Iowa's premier equestrian facility.
Kirkwood Community College has a Horse Judging Team that competes intercollegiately.
